Multiple styles run through the album, each of which Haustein has mastered. Lead single Freeze outputs jazz stylings with contemporary trip-hop atmosphere.
Melancholia and understated guitar compliment the deep cellos and layering of light cymbal work, all topped off with soulful vocals. The Floods’ second single Alone By The Water, sonically portrays an immense experience with the underbelly of an emotional message. Rumbling and deep instrumentalism, anchored by the puncturing beats conjure visions of ocean mysteries. Haustein uses strings to compliment the soundscape and envelop audiences with jazz and world music fusions.
Judith also notes: “I take a lot of inspiration from extreme landscapes and being by the sea – also most of the songs are connected to what trauma victims experience emotionally when trying to reconnect with the world’. Reconnecting with her authenticity, no matter how painful, bore the creative fruit of the album and perhaps its unique sound.
This concept at the core, this album encompasses a process back to authenticity and self-compassion. The ebbs and flows similar to that of the water that is so present within The Flood, the orchestral sections and unpredictable nature of each track makes for an engaging listen.
The Flood was self-produced by Haustein and brought together talented musicians of different disciplines from across London, Stuttgart, and Berlin.
