Hands up if you have been kicked out of a bar?
*I raise my hand sheepishly as I reminisce about how I once got kicked out a bar I worked in*
HOWEVER, good things can *sometimes* come from being booted out your favourite boozer. Usually it ends up with one waddling to the nearest kebab. Although for this Telford-four piece, it was the start of something new. Eamonn (guitar) met Dave (vox/guitar) as he was getting booted out a pub following an altercation about payment for a gig. Helping him carry his gear home, they quickly discovered they shared a passion for the same music and have never looked back since.
Taking lockdown as an opportunity to lock themselves away in a remote farmhouse and record, the quartet have released their EP Black Magic that uses the trio of tracks as an honest project about mental health and relationships. With musical similarities to Black Keys, Miles Kane and Kasabian, the title track screams out for radio play following its catchy melodies as the track covers the addictive qualities of women and substances of all kinds- both a warning and celebration of their power.
As far as the melodies go, there is nothing groundbreakingly new at hand. However, the bands that Four Crooks so clearly take inspiration from swim through their sound making it enjoyable and something I have been listening too since I first heard them. Four Crooks aim for rock ‘n’ roll in their core and their sound indicates that.
