Award-winning artist Emeli Sandé has released a powerful new single, ‘Roots’, which marks a new chapter in her career. The track, released on her own label Venus Records, highlights her desire for female empowerment in the male-dominated music industry.
Co-written and produced by Ollie Green, ‘Roots’ pairs gentle keys with Sandé’s powerful vocals in a moving reflection on our history and future. With poignant lyrics such as “Our roots are in the soil / They’re in the fields”, Sandé explores themes of legacy, community, and nature. The song’s release kicks off an exciting few months for Sandé, who will be performing it with a full choir and orchestra at Belgium’s Night of the Proms. She will also be traveling to the Vatican in December to perform for the Pope at his Christmas concert, as well as making a special appearance on The One Show to revisit her own roots in Aberdeenshire.
As Sandé moves her studio back home to Scotland, where her musical journey began, she reflects on the influence of her Zambian heritage and is excited to reintroduce herself to the world with a new album. Having solidified her place in the Great British musical canon with performances at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Sandé’s debut studio album ‘Our Version of Events’ was the top-selling UK album of 2012. She was also appointed MBE in 2017 for her services to music. ‘Roots’ is the first release on Venus Records and will be available on all platforms November 29th.
