For 26 years, Dale Cornelius’s “A Whispered Dawn (Spencer’s Lullaby)” existed only as a manuscript. Written in 1999 during a frightening period surrounding his son’s birth, the string quartet composition now receives its first recording on What Is Carried, What Is Left Behind?, the Australian composer’s forthcoming album with Eclective Strings.
Cornelius’s first-born son, Spencer, was one of the first infants in Australia to undergo an operation in utero. Born at just 27 weeks, he spent three months in neonatal intensive care while doctors remained uncertain whether he would survive. Revisiting the music written during that period has given Cornelius an opportunity to approach those memories from a different perspective. “Recording it now, alongside music written from that more honest place, is an act of reclamation,” he said. “It’s the answer that piece has been waiting on for twenty-six years.”
Personal experience also informs the opening track, “In This Moment, What Matters Most?” Its title comes from a phrase that became important to Cornelius while caring for his mother and dealing with anxiety, eventually becoming both a tattoo and a composition. Elsewhere, the album draws on an environmental recording made in Montalcino, Italy, where the sound of a metal door moving in the wind helped inspire the title track and the wider project.
Scheduled for October 2026, the six-track release combines string quartet, synthesizers and found sound in stereo and Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio. Its collaborators, Eclective Strings, include members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Partridge String Quartet. By placing the previously unrecorded lullaby alongside newer material, Cornelius connects two distinct periods of his life within an album concerned with memory, uncertainty and renewal.
