Music industry icon Don Laka is set to bring his acclaimed live show to audiences across the UK in October and November, as part of a tour to celebrate the phenomenal artist’s 50th anniversary in music. Don Laka is a celebrated composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and jazz legend.
Kwaai Jazz fans will know him for his multi-platinum albums and Grammy nomination for work with Hugh Maskela, while the broader music community will recognize his pioneering influence in the development of two South African musical styles – Kwaito and Afro-Pop, as well as Kwaai Jazz and its offshoot Mapianos. His legacy was officially recognized in a major way when he was awarded the South African Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
Beyond his own creative output, Laka is also remembered for his teaching, philanthropy, and business acumen, founding Kalawa Jazzmee Records back in his home country and facilitating the production, recording, and marketing of music without the backing of a major label. Laka will bring his incredible repertoire of songs to stages across the UK – from the South African Embassy in London, to The Six Six Bar in Cambridge, The Latest Music Bar in Brighton, Acapela Studio in Cardiff, The Jam Jar in Bristol, The Night Owl in Birmingham, and The 606 Club in London.
