After being likened to artists like Dave and Loyle Corner, it’s clear to see why there’s so much hype around exciting new UK rapper SFZ.
The likenesses don’t stop there though, following in the footsteps of Dave, SFZ is also trained in classical piano. A solid start for the budding artist to say the least.
After garnering deserved attention from BBC Introducing, SFZ (real name Joe Ordish) has had some considerable play time on radio shows already.
His latest track ‘Elevate’ is completely self-recorded and produced, which is a huge accomplishment in itself.
The track revisits his past, talking about his battles with mental health and addiction. Joe has said that he’s not just using music to help heal himself, but to help those around him also.

Moving on to the track itself, it’s clear to see why BBC Introducing put him on their radar. With a lo-fi, hip-hop beat to kick things off, it gives the track an early 00’s vibe with an injection from the modern rap scene.
Most notably, his talent shines through from the start. The first few bars are clear indicators that this guy isn’t messing around. The flow and timing of the rap is impeccable, marrying the pair into one. For me, this is hugely important.
I often find that rap artists either have great lyrics or a great beat, but struggle to bring the two together. With SFZ, this isn’t the case. He makes the two work in harmony, producing a solid example of what UK rappers have to offer.
As well, he’s incredibly succinct between verses. Again, rappers can be guilty of losing their flow as they move from verse to verse, but he absolutely nails it.
Switching up his style to make it work and altering the delivery means that he can keep the track flowing, without making you feel like he’s taking a break.
Speaking of switching up the style, the chorus is another great example of this. Joe intentionally slows the beat down, giving the listener the chance to appreciate what they’ve just listened to.
I have to say though, the most refreshing part of the song was the fact you could actually understand every word. I completely despise genres like mumble rap, why would I want to listen to a song where I can’t understand a bloody word?
Now, alright, you might call me a grandad for that kind of opinion, but stick with me here. You can’t accept or truly understand someone’s talent if you can’t immerse yourself in every part of their music.
With SFZ, you can do exactly that. With this in mind, it’s no lie to say that he is certainly one to keep an eye on. With an upcoming album, ‘Progress’, set for release in 2021, this rapper has got a bright future ahead.
